Belgium put an end to the United States' stint at the FIFA World Cup 2014 Tuesday with a 2-1 victory.
It seems like no team in the FIFA World Cup 2014 wants to go down without a fight, with most of the top 16 matches going into extra time and penalties. This match was no exception. Unfortunately, Belgium put an end to the United States' World cup run, stealing a 2-1 victory.
No goals were scored in the the regular plaing time of 90 minutes. However, during extra time, Belgium's Kevin De Bruyne found the back of the net at the 93rd minute, following by a world-class goal by his teammate Romelu Lukaku in the 105th minute.
Julian Green from U.S.A, at the 107th minute, scored a goal taking the end score line to 2-1.
"We need to find a way to move on from this, but the hope is that the team can benefit from this experience," coach Jurgen Klinsmann said, according to The Telegraph. "We have some good tournaments ahead of us. We host the Copa America in two years' time, so it is chance for the team and the sport to develop now."
The U.S. National team took to Twitter after the match to thank their fans for their support throughout the tournament.
"#USMNT Fans: #ThankYou for your support, passion & pride the whole #WorldCup. We stand together as #OneNationOneTeam," they tweeted.
Argentina also made it through to the top 8 scoring one goal against Switzerland, scored again during extra time. Argentina's Ángel di María found the back of the net in the 118th minute.
Belgium will now play Argentina to secure a place in the semi-finals. The other top 8 matches are Brazil Vs Colombia, Netherlands Vs Croatia and France Vs Germany.
