A man was apparently so wrapped up in an argument with his girlfriend that he hung onto the back of her car as she sped down a North Carolina highway on Saturday.
The unidentified man was caught on camera hanging onto the trunk of a white Oldsmobile Alero, with his legs flying behind him, as a woman drove down Interstate 77 in Charlotte with two children inside, WSOC-TV reported.
Unable to believe their eyes, witnesses immediately called 911 to report the bizarre incident.
"You need to get an officer out here on 77," one caller said according to the station. "This guy is going to get killed."
The driver, reportedly the man's girlfriend, was going at least 55 miles per hour. The man was able to break the back windshield and climb inside before the woman got off at an exit near Clanton Road, witnesses said.
Officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department later identified the boyfriend and girlfriend but did not release their names.
The couple's fight began when the boyfriend "assaulted her by grabbing her arm and pulling her onto the ground," near the intersection of South Boulevard and Woodlawn, police said. The woman left her car in the intersection and ran to a shoe store at a nearby shopping center where she asked for help, witnesses told WSOC-TV.
Moments later the woman was seen driving off while boyfriend walked away. But another 20 minutes later the man was seen clinging onto the back of her car as she sped down the road.
The woman and her children reportedly got out at a gas station after she exited near Clanton Road. The boyfriend drove off in the car, investigators said
Police said the woman does not want to press charges against the boyfriend but the investigation is ongoing.
