Arizona police arrested a man last Friday they say was trying to shoot the moon.
Police arrived at the man's Prescott Valley residence in response to a 911 call from a woman saying her boyfriend was fireing shots from a handgun, Sergeant Brandon Bonney told The Arizona Republic. The gunman, 39-year-old Cameron Read, told police he was not trying to hurt anyone but that he was trying to shoot the moon.
Read refused to submit to being arrested, causing a scuffle that resulted in him further damaging the home and the police forcing him into custody. He faces charges of unlawfully discharging a firearm, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and endangerment and misdemeanor criminal damage, according to the Associated Press.
The woman and her teenage son were in the home at the time of the incident.
Neighbors told police that Read was talking about seeing Halley's Comet before the shooting. Read reportedly open fired out of the window, followed by a round of more shots, The Arizona Republic reported.
Police said Read admitted to the shooting, during which no one was injured. He also told police that he had smoked pot earlier that evening.
Read was booked at the Yavapai County Jail. He did not have an attorney as of Wednesday.
Halley's Comet is only seen from Earth once every 76 years, according to NASA. The last time it was spotted was in 1986. It is expected to cross Earth's path again in 2061. Every year pieces from the comet break off to form the Eta Aquarid meteor shower.
