Google to Launch Android TV in June

Google Inc. is reportedly planning to launch Android TV at the upcoming Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco.

Rumors about the TV came out in April when The Verge got a copy of a document stating that the "Android TV is an entertainment interface, not a computing platform. It's all about finding and enjoying content with the least amount of friction."

The search giant worked with developers to create simple apps for the set-up box interface, which would display mini movie posters of movies, TV shows, applications and games. The gadget could also support voice commands and notifications.

The report additionally gave an idea how to use the Android TV. Users could scroll up and down to navigate on different categories or sideways to select from Google's suggestions via remote control. The remote control also functions as a game controller.

Google declined to comment about the Android TV at the time, but sources of GigaOM shared that it would be unveiled at the Google I/O developer conference.

Sources added that the Android TV would be somewhat similar to Google TV that was unveiled in 2010 except that Android TV would focus more on online media services and games. The company reportedly met with media services including Hulu Plus and Netflx to provide service for the device.

GigaOM was also able to get a preview of the Android TV interface. The report compared it to that of Amazon's Fire TV with a heavy focus on gaming.

The decision to make another TV platform is a tough decision for the search giant after its failed venture with Google TV three years ago. But the company remained positive to try again after its Chromecast streaming stick sold millions during its launch last summer. The TV is designed to be partnered with the Chromecast stick, which could attract millions of potential buyers.
