NBC News journalist Ann Curry found herself in need of assistance after breaking her ankle while hiking - luckily, some boy scouts on a nearby trail were able to help.
According to the Associated Press, a blog post on the Boy Scouts magazine website reported on an incident in which the scouts of Troop 368 from Berkeley Heights encountered Curry and her family while on a training hike in Harriman State Park in New York.
Curry, 57, was reportedly sitting on the ground with a broken ankle and needed medical attention.
"We were hiking along, and we came to a trail intersection," Scouter Rick Jurgens, a firefighter and EMT, said, "A lady was sitting on the ground with her one leg out. We didn't think anything of it, but one of the guys asked if everything is OK. She said, 'No, not really. I think I broke my ankle.' She told us to keep going, but the guys refused."
Without knowing who she was, scouts splinted Curry's ankle and carried her down Harriman State Park's Bear Mountain with a makeshift stretcher crafted out of sticks and a tarp. Curry was carried to her car, where her family waited for her.
According to Jurgens, the broadcaster "was in a good mood, asking us about our Philmont trip. She wanted to hear what brought us to Harriman State Park."
"We work on these requirements, and here's an opportunity where it was a true test of all those first class, second class first-aid requirements," Jurgens said. "They got to use it and use it for real. And they did an outstanding job."
Curry's husband told the troop, "You guys are the best. I don't know what I would do without you guys," Jurgens shared. FOX reported that Curry's injury would heal in approximately 10 to 12 weeks.
Curry wrote a letter to the troops and said, "Your skill and professionalism were a great comfort to me. I was in great pain but you were very careful in carrying me over the sharp rocks and into the car that took me to the hospital... I feel enormously lucky that you came along at just the right moment, and were so willing to help a stranger in need. You are a credit to the Boy Scouts and your families, and I want you to know I am deeply grateful for your kindness and skill."
On Friday, Curry also wrote a thank you tweet to the Scout troop.
