A Utah teenager accused of fatally shooting a police officer and injuring a deputy pleaded not guilty on Monday, according to The Associated Press.

Meagan Grunwald, 17, is being charged as an adult and faces a dozen charges including murder and attempted murder.

Her lawyer, Dean Zabriskie, said Grunwald will testify in her own defense that her boyfriend forced her to commit the crimes at gunpoint.

"She is the only one left who knows what happened in the cab of that truck," Zabriskie said. "This is a terrible case. We mourn for this dead officer with the rest of the community, we just don't believe our client is responsible."

Prosecutors claim her boyfriend, Angel Garcia-Juaregui, 27, was responsible for the Jan. 30 shootings but believe Grunwald willfully participated in the car chase and a carjacking.

As a result, Sgt. Cory Wride died and Deputy Greg Sherwood was injured.

Garcia-Juargeui died in a shootout with officers, The AP said.

Prosecutor Tim Taylor said a plea deal had not been discussed with Grunwald or her attorney but is open to the idea.

"We have not met with the Zabriskies to discuss that yet, but in a case like this we always consider if that is appropriate," Taylor told The Daily Herald.

However, any sort of deal would first have to be discussed with the Wride family.

"We want to keep them updated and make sure they understand the strengths and weaknesses of the case," Taylor said. "We know she [Grunwald] was there and participated, but intent and motive are big issues in this case."

Grunwald's next court appearance will be on June 2, where a trial date and other pre-trial hearings will likely be scheduled.
