3 Children, 2 Adults Killed After Van Lands On Top Of Car

Three children and two adults were killed after a van struck and landed on top of their car as it paused at a stop sign in Hesperia, California, NBC Los Angeles reported.

The tragedy occurred at around 7 a.m. Monday when a delivery van drove into oncoming traffic and crashed into the Honda at a stop sign at Main Street and Balsam Avenue. The van, which was traveling east, crossed to the west side lanes, collided with the Honda and flipped on top of it and its five passengers, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A woman and one girl were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, NCB Los Angeles reported. A man and boy were pronounced dead after they were taken to a local hospital.

The third boy was found dead inside the car at around 1:30 p.m. after a tow truck specializing in heavy equipment removed the van from atop.

"Due to the extreme structural damage, the victim was concealed and could not be accessed/ seen by emergency personnel," the Sheriff's Department said in a statement obtained by NBC Los Angeles.

Both adults are said to be in their 30s. The first two children were between the ages of 3 and 5. The child found later in the Honda was a teenager, the LA Times reported.

Jodie Miller, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department, told the newspaper the victims' names have not been released in order to give authorities time to notify their families.

The male driver of the Ford van was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Witnesses say the driver, who was the van's only passenger, appeared disoriented after he managed to escape from the van, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Investigators from the Sheriff's Department's Hesperia station do not yet know what caused the deadly crash. No one has been arrested, according to the LA Times.
