Twitter-owned app Vine has redesigned its website to allow users to view six-second videos without the need of signing in or creating an account.
Four months ahead of its web debut, the developers of Vine decided to update the site's features to make it more accessible to everyone, including non-members. Prior to the update, one had to create an account to view the six-second shorts, upload videos, create playlists, explore channels or search for trending tags.
"Up until now, the primary way to watch, share and discover Vine videos has been on your phone. We've heard from the Vine community that you sometimes want to explore Vine and view videos on your computer too. Today, we're excited to introduce a brand-new version of vine.co, which adds a bunch of new features that will help you find and discover Vine videos on the web," wrote web lead Janessa Det in a blog post.
One of the updates visible in the webpage is the "Explore" page that readily shows common channels next to Trending Tags and Popular Now. Those who have tried the mobile app are familiar with this feature, which is now more user-friendly.
Another addition includes a search bar that lets users find their desired content simply by typing a person's name, tag, or a location.
The changes are comparable to those of YouTube, which doesn't require sign-ins for users to enjoy the service.
Meanwhile, it is still uncertain if there will be an improvement on Vine's user base. According to Techcrunch, despite the absence of its two co-founders who have already left the company, the service is still aiming to up its competition against Instagram on a mobile consumption level. To date, the site has about 40 million registered users, while Instagram has 200 million active users.
