A man and woman fell to their deaths after jumping off the George Washington Bridge on Monday morning, authorities told the New York Daily News. The incident appears to be a double suicide.
Rescue teams from the NYPD and the FDNY pulled the pair out of the Hudson River near 125th street where they floated after jumping from the bridge. The pair, believed to be in their 40s, was rushed to St. Luke's hospital after rescue workers administered CPR. They were pronounced dead a little after noon, Port Authority spokesman Joseph Pentangelo told the newspaper.
Construction workers on the bridge's lower level said they saw the man and woman walking on the bridge's walkway that morning. They saw something fall past them and heard a splash at around 11:20 a.m. The workers looked down and saw the bodies in the water, Pentangelo told the newspaper.
Investigators found no suicide note or car on the bridge. However their deaths are believed to be a double suicide, police said according to the Gothamist.
The man and woman floated nearly 1,000 feet and were in critical condition when they were pulled out of the river and transported to the pier at West 125th Street.
An NYPD spokesman said earlier their chances of survival were not good, the Gothamist reported. The pair died at the hospital at 12:20 p.m., according to the Daily News.
The victims' identities were not immediately known.
This is not the first suicide attempt off the George Washington Bridge this month. A 29-year-old South American man was presumed dead and after he jumped off the bridge on April 11, the Gothamist reported. A minute later a woman tried to do the same, but she was stopped by motorists who saw her try to jump.
The George Washington Bridge is 212 feet above the water at its center, according to the Daily News.
