A woman in New York was fatally stabbed outside of her apartment building on Saturday morning, the New York Daily News reported.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when Jasmine Canton, 19, began arguing with the attacker, who then pulled out a knife and stabbed her in the chest.
Canton was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
The attacker fled the scene and is still on the run, the Daily News said. Police are still unsure of possible motives behind the gruesome attack.
Through surveillance footage, investigators were able to release a photo of the suspect who they described as an Hispanic male, between 20 and 30 years old, and last seen in a black Northface fleece and black pants.
Residents expressed their shock to CBS News over something so brutal happening in broad daylight.
"It's sad because it shouldn't have escalated to that. She's only a kid, she was just 19. She shouldn't have been stabbed and not even making it to the hospital to be saved, it's really sad," Miguel Concepcion told CBS News.
Canton's neighbor, who only identified himself as Leon, told the New York Post that he may have seen the suspect flee around 8:45 a.m.
"I walking my dog, I saw a dude run out of the basement with a huge knife. He ran down the block, his clothes were covered in blood," Leon told The Post. "He stopped and looked at me and my dog - the look in his eyes was crazy. He was definitely high on something."
Anyone with information on the stabbing is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
