A Malaysia Airlines flight headed for India was forced to make an emergency landing after one of its tires burst during takeoff, the airline said according to the Associated Press.
The 166-passenger Boeing 737-800 took off from Kuala Lumpur on Monday when the right tire burst. The airline originally said the right landing gear "malfunctioned upon takeoff," but then amended the announcement to include the busted tire as the cause.
"This was because one of the tires on the right-hand main landing gear burst during takeoff," the airline said in a statement to the AP.
Air traffic control told the pilot to return to the airport after the tire's remains were found on the runway. Fire crews were called to the scene as a safety precaution. Flight 192 landed four hours after takeoff at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Monday morning. No one was injured, the AP reported.
"They have landed safely- thank God!" tweeted Hishammuddin Hussein, acting Transport Minister and Defense Minister, the AP reported.
The malfunction comes at a tumultuous time for Malaysia Airlines. An international search effort is currently underway for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which disappeared March 8 in the skies between Malaysia and south Vietnam on its way to Beijing. Investigators believe the plane, with 239 people onboard, crashed somewhere in the Indian Ocean.
After numerous false sightings of what was thought to be plane debris, search teams have now deployed an underwater drone to search for the plane at the bottom of the ocean. As of Monday the Bluefin-21 drone has completed its eighth mission and has covered nearly two thirds of the designated search area. No signs of the plane have been found.
Bluefin-21 is scheduled to make its ninth trip Monday, CNN reported.
"I appeal to everybody around the world," Hishammuddin said according to CNN, "to pray and pray hard that we find something to work on over the next couple of days."
