A teenage girl who posted a threatening tweet to American Airlines was arrested in the Netherlands shortly after putting the message online.
Police spokesperson Roland Ekkers told the Associated Press that a 14-year-old unidentified girl turned herself in to law enforcement officials in Rotterdam, and is currently being interrogated.
A parent reportedly escorted the girl to the police station when she turned herself in. According to Ekkers, it's still unclear why the girl sent the tweet in the first place.
The issue began on Sunday, when a Twitter account thought to be linked to the teenage girl posted a terroristic message directed toward American Airlines.
"hello my name's Ibrahim and I'm from Afghanistan," the girl - identified as 14-year-old Sarah on her Twitter account, which is currently suspended - wrote. "I'm part of Al Qaida and on June 1st I'm gonna do something really big bye."
American tweeted back with the message: "Sarah, we take these threats very seriously. Your IP address and details will be forwarded to security and the FBI."
In a stream of subsequent tweets, the shocked girl responded with apologies and explanations.
"I was joking and it was my friend not me, take her IP address, not mine," the girl tweeted.
"I'm just a fangirl pls I don't have evil thoughts and plus I'm a white girl," the Daily News reported another tweet as saying.
American Airlines ended up deleting the first tweet sent to the teenage girl, representatives from the carrier told The Huffington Post.
"The safety of our passengers and crew is our number one priority," a spokesperson said. "We take security matters very seriously and work with authorities on a case-by-case basis. Regarding [the] tweet, we removed it after it had been addressed in order to be able to focus on our customers."
The FBI declined to comment whether federal officials were involved in this case.
