California police officers opened fire on a woman wielding a baseball bat in a threatening manner on Sunday evening.
Santa Clara Police Lt. Kurt Clarke told Northern California news station KTVU that law enforcement officials fatally shot the unidentified suspect after she attacked them with a baseball bat.
911 dispatchers received a call at about 4:50 p.m. this past weekend from a female making "threats to harm herself and others." Officers responded to the alert by contacting the woman at her apartment inside a complex located in the 5000 block of Lick Mill Drive, the San Jose Mercury News reported on Monday.
Officers arrived at her front door about 15 minutes after they received the warning. They called out to her from the entrance, and she emerged with an aluminum baseball bat. She then reportedly used the bat to try and assault the law enforcement officials.
"Fearing for their safety, two officers discharged their firearm, striking the subject," a press release by Santa Clara police read.
Clarke told KTVU that both the officers were worried for their lives, and then took action.
The woman received medical treatment at the scene of the event, and was then transferred to a hospital nearby. She later died from her injuries, Clarke stated.
An investigation has been opened into Sunday night's shooting.
The woman's identity has not yet been released, nor have either of the officers been named, pending the probe's completion.
This is a developing story. Check back later for details.
