A Northern California teen who sold marijuana-laced brownies to buy a dress for prom could face deportation.
19-year-old Yuba City resident Saira Munoz was finishing her senior year at River Valley High School when she reportedly commissioned a friend to pawn off pot brownies she'd baked. Munoz, who was 18 at the time, told law enforcement officials that she needed to raise money to purchase a prom dress.
But when a fellow student fell ill from the brownies and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital by ambulance, school officials alerted authorities, and Munoz ended up in handcuffs.
According to the Los Angeles Times, a California court found Munoz guilty of employing a minor to sell marijuana on Monday. The teen was sentenced to four years' probation and nine days in jail with credit for time served, CBS' local station in Sacramento reported.
Due to the felony status of these charges, Munoz could also face deportation to her home country of Mexico, the judge announced this week.
Munoz first entered the United States on a temporary visa 14 years ago. Officials from the Sutter County Probation Department stated that they are looking into her conviction with federal investigators, to determine whether or not Munoz should be sent away.
Carlos Robles, a friend of Munoz's who also attended River Valley High School, defended her actions during an interview with CBS13.
"People make mistakes," Robles said. "I was hurt, because she got arrested, and nobody wanted to see somebody we cared about go away."
Robles told the local news station that he's still friends with Munoz to this day.
"She was just a very positive person," he stated. "I just don't like the turnout of this...There's people that deserve to be deported, and she just wasn't one of them. There's people that do way worse."
