The Detroit Lions may look to trade up in the 2014 NFL draft for receiver Sammy Watkins.  The Lions, who hosted Watkins for a pre-draft workout, reportedly want to create an offensive powerhouse by pairing him with Pro Bowl receiver Calvin Johnson.

Detroit, owner of the No. 10 pick in the upcoming draft, appears likely to trade up and go after Watkins on draft day.

"The Lions continue to show all signs of pursuing him," ESPN's Michael Rothstein wrote on Tuesday.  "On Tuesday, the Detroit Free Press reported that the Lions brought Watkins in for a pre-draft visit.  This on top of heading to his Pro Day at Clemson and having dinner with Watkins before they attended the Pro Day.  So clearly, the interest and research is there."

The Free Press also reported that Watkins met with Johnson and receiver Golden Tate during the visit.

For his part, Watkins has indicated an openness -- even a preference -- to play in Detroit alongside Johnson.

"I think that'd be a blessing, having Calvin Johnson on the other side," Watkins told ESPN during the NFL combine.  "He's still young.  It'd definitely be a blessing going to Detroit."

Watkins' presence on the field would make defenses play Johnson more honestly, and Johnson's presence -- both on and off the field -- would help Watkins make a smoother transition to the pros.

"That's the best situation you can go into," Watkins said.  "Then you're looking at a great player every week and he's pushing you.  He's teaching you the ropes, breaking down film, how to study other guys, transitioning into the NFL."

It's unlikely Watkins will still be on the board by the 10th pick.  The St. Louis Rams, albeit needing a receiver themselves, are open to trading their No. 2 pick for the right price.

Trading for the second overall pick and using it on Watkins is a steep price, but not if Detroit wants him bad enough.
