Parishioners who attended Florida megachurch leader Bob Coy's services said he was never shy about his life of drug use and partying before finding Jesus.
58-year-old Coy, former leader of Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, resigned from his position on Monday due to an unspecified "moral failing."
The church didn't offer any details or reasoning to explain why the pastor suddenly left the organization. Now, members of the congregation are slowly unraveling the story behind Coy's life turnaround.
Parishioner Mitch Guertler told NBC News that Coy left his party-heavy lifestyle to join the church, and candidly told stories of his lewd acts of debauchery in Las Vegas, where he struggled with various addictions.
"He's always said from the pulpit: 'Don't follow me. I'm just a person like you,'" Guertler recalled. "You could relate to his struggles, to his past. He's human. He's made a bad decision - or a few."
The pastor also spoke openly about his issues with cocaine abuse while he worked in the Detroit music industry, and later, a Las Vegas casino with live, nude acts.
But Coy started going to church in the 1980s, and eventually joined the Calvary Chapel staff in Sin City.
"I'm not the same cocaine-addicted alcoholic womanizer I used to be," Coy told the Miami Herald for a 2000 profile. "I'm a pastor."
Writer Michael Newnham told the Huffington Post on Tuesday that the religious leader's "moral failings" included extramarital affairs.
"We have confirmed that Coy has admitted to at least two affairs in the past year alone and has had a long standing 'problem with pornography,'" Newnham said, adding that Coy was removed from the membership board page for the Calvary Chapel Association.
But spokesperson for the church Mike Miller told the Huffington Post that officials had no statement to give beyond the one posted on the organization's website.
"We're not going to speculate on the blogs right now," Miller said.
Coy's sermons have been taken off of the Calvary Chapel's homepage.
