Two Detroit men were arrested on Monday for the severe beating of a man who accidentally hit a 10-year-old boy with his vehicle last week.
24-year-old James Davis and 30-year-old Wonzey Saffold were arrested just days after police took two teenagers into custody for the April 2nd event, which left 54-year-old motorist Steve Utash hospitalized in critical condition.
17-year-old Bruce Wimbush was arraigned on Monday, the Associated Press reported. The teen has been charged with assault with intent to murder and assault with intent to do bodily harm.
Davis and Saffold have received the same charges.
Wimbush entered a not-guilty plea against the allegations. His bond has been set at $500,000.
Saffold and Davis will be arraigned Tuesday afternoon, while officials are still mulling whether to try the 16-year-old in custody as an adult.
Steve Utash struck 10-year-old David Harris last Wednesday, after the boy stepped off a curb in front of a Clark gas station on the city's east side.
According to Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody, it appeared the driver hit the child at about 4:10 p.m., then pulled over and exited the vehicle to check on the victim. Residents of the neighborhood and passerby who watched the crash then reportedly assaulted Utash.
The child survived with no broken bones.
Police said the crowd of about 10 to 12 bystanders, Wimbush among them, mauled Utash, causing him multiple serious injuries.
"The facts of this case are unbelievably tragic," Worthy wrote in a statement.
Utash's daughter Felicia said her family was devastated by the attack.
"What happened to my dad is a shame," Felicia wrote on Facebook. "He was doing the right thing like he always does. He's a tree trimmer for a living and makes sure all the squirrels are out of a tree before he cuts it down. He's an amazing dad and person."
Authorities are currently looking for the other attackers, AP reported.
