Florida Megachurch Pastor Steps Down from Position Citing 'Moral Failing': Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale's Bob Coy Resigns

A Florida megachurch pastor stepped down from his position over the weekend, citing a "moral failing" that would not allow him to move forward with his duties.

A statement by Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale officials stated that Bob Coy officially resigned last week.

The church didn't offer any details or reasoning to explain why the longtime minister suddenly left the organization, Reuters reported.

Coy's sermons have been removed from the Calvary Chapel's website.

There has not yet been a specific explanation on Coy's "moral failing," either.

Over 7,000 members of the church, a branch of a California ministry first founded 49 years ago, attended a meeting on Sunday to hear Coy's official statement of resignation.

Fort Lauderdale-based newspaper the Sun Sentinel reported that that both parishioners and church staff showed up to the meeting.

Spokesperson Mike Miller gave a short announcement on Coy's voluntary termination.

"We're not commenting any further," Reuters reported Miller as saying.

58-year-old Coy first moved from Las Vegas to south Florida in 1985. He then founded the megachurch, which rapidly expanded and became one of the largest religious institutions in the nation.

In Florida alone, the church has 10 large campuses - the flagship location near Fort Lauderdale among them.

Well-known evangelical orators like Kirk Cameron and Billy Graham have spoken at a number of the church's locations throughout the United States.
