Police have not yet figured out how identical twin brothers died three years ago and were left decomposing in their recliners inside their Chattanooga, Tennessee home. The brothers, not found until two weeks ago, are believed to have died together in 2011 and were left in their home this entire time.
An autopsy confirmed the skeletal remains as twin brothers Andrew and Anthony Johnson, 63. Police found the skeletal remains in recliners in the living room after a relative asked they be checked on, the Associated Press reported. With no signs of foul play and no suspected cause of death, the life and death of the twins continue to leave Chattanooga police and residents baffled.
Several neighbors say the twins kept to themselves and never had guests.
"I didn't even know their names," Linda Maffett, who lived across the street, told the AP "It's a strange story, it's sad story. I think it's sad that they were sitting there that long with nobody checking on them.
Neighbors also say the brothers often wore surgical masks while working on their lawn. The brothers one day stopped cutting their grass, but it somehow kept getting cut, the AP reported.
A relative of the twins asked the police to check on them back in 2011. But police found nothing outside the house that warranted entering the property. A relative then told police it would not be unusual if the brothers moved without telling anyone, the AP reported.
Meanwhile, the neighborhood assumed the house was unoccupied. Police learned the brothers had driver's licenses, insurance and possibly owned their own business. It appears any other type of contact with society was nonexistent.
"While this incident is tragic and unfortunate, Andrew and Anthony lived a hermit lifestyle and did not communicate with family or anyone else," said a police statement obtained by the AP.
The Hamilton County medical examiner is currently running toxicology tests to further understand how the Johnson twins died.
