Chicago can sweep the series with another win. The White Sox opened the season with a 5-3 win over the Twins and followed it with a 7-6 win on Wednesday.

Jose Quintana will take the mound on Thursday. He finished last season with a 9-7 record and 3.51 ERA. His improvement in 2013 earned him a five-year, $21 million contract extension last week.

"Jose quickly has established himself as a quality major league starting pitcher ... and we expect him to be an important piece of our rotation for the foreseeable future," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said in a statement, via ESPN. "... We are excited to be able to reward him for what he has accomplished thus far in his career."

Quintana will duel Twins pitcher Phil Hughes, who's coming off a poor season (4-14, 5.19 ERA) with the New York Yankees.

"It's just a different atmosphere over here," Hughes said. "... It's kind of nice to hit the reset button. ... I need to worry about myself first and not use the stadium or my environment as a crutch."

Hughes particularly struggled playing at Yankee Stadium, where ESPN reports he went 1-10 with a 6.32 ERA. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire, though, already sees a difference between the Hughes of last season and the one wearing a Minnesota uniform today.

"The ball's coming out of his hand real good," Gardenhire said. "His velocity is good. His arm strength is good."
