Detroit Man Who Hit 11-Year-Old With Truck Mauled by Angry Mob of Eyewitnesses

A Michigan motorist who struck an 11-year-old boy on Wednesday with his vehicle was severely beaten by an angry mob of vigilantes.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the driver is currently in critical condition.

"He got his," one witness who asked to remain anonymous said. "He got beat up real bad."

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said it appeared the driver hit the child at around 4:10 p.m., then pulled over and exited the vehicle to check on the victim. Passerby and residents of the neighborhood who watched the crash then reportedly assaulted him.

"Our chief indicated there was a large group of approximately 30 or more people," Woody said during an interview with the Detroit Free Press this week. "But that's not to say they all took part in the assault, but they did come out to assist the child, and it was a large group at that time. They could have been from that large group."

Law enforcement officials who arrived on the scene shortly after the fight broke out transferred the motorist to St. John Hospital. The child's condition is currently unknown.

Medical officials reported that the driver had serious head injuries.

"He could potentially die," Woody told the Free Press.

Eyewitnesses who recounted the event to reporters said they saw the young boy get hit by the motorist's truck while crossing an intersection with around three other kids. A woman who declined to give her name said the boy was on his way to a Clark gas station on the opposite side of the street.

"This little boy was screaming," she said. "There was a lot of people that came out. It was crazy."

She and other neighbors emerged from their homes once they heard the child's cries. She then told the Detroit Free Press that she saw a group of local residents beat up the motorist.

The driver went to a gas station in the area for help after being beaten.

Police are still looking for the people who attacked the driver, and have not yet identified any suspects in particular.
