A southeastern Michigan woman was reportedly victim of a hate crime, after three men recognized her from her televised marriage to another woman, then attacked her.
The 28-year-old unidentified woman, a resident of Ypsilanti Township, had recently appeared on television to marry her partner, authorities told the Detroit Free Press.
She'd just gotten off of a bus on Monday and was on her way home when three men came toward her just before 6 p.m.
She told law enforcement officials from Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office that she was walking through the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 3000 block of Roundtree Boulevard at the time, the Detroit Free Press reported.
"One of the males stated, 'Hey b----. Are you that (anti-gay slur) from the news?' One of the males then punched her in the face, which knocked her to the ground and unconscious," a news release from officials stated.
When the woman regained consciousness, one of the men reportedly kicked her in the torso. The three then bolted, leaving her crumpled on the ground.
One of the suspects has been described as white, in his mid-20s, between 5-foot-10 and 5-foot-11, tall and heavyset with a low and husky voice, the Detroit Free Press reported.
A description could not be provided for the other two men.
The woman and her partner were married on March 22, during a short window of time in which the state's ban on LGBT unions was lifted. A federal court has since reenacted the ban, the Associated Press reported.
