The United States opened its home World Cup with a 4-1 win over Paraguay on Friday, while co-host Canada earned a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina — and on Saturday, the tournament's third day is headlined by Brazil's opener against Morocco at MetLife Stadium.
In front of a home crowd at the Los Angeles stadium in Inglewood, California, the U.S. took an early lead in the seventh minute on an own goal by Paraguay's Damián Bobadilla. Folarin Balogun added two goals in the first half, and Christian Pulisic had a hand in the opening goals to put the match out of reach before halftime. Gio Reyna added a late fourth as the U.S. cruised to three points in Group D under coach Mauricio Pochettino. It was the first U.S. men's World Cup match on home soil in decades.
Earlier in the day, Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina played to a 1-1 draw in Toronto, leaving the co-hosts with a point from their opening Group B match. Mexico, the third co-host, opened the tournament on Thursday with a 2-0 win over South Africa at Estadio Azteca.
Attention now turns to Saturday's Group C and Group B fixtures. Brazil begins its tournament against Morocco at 6 p.m. Eastern at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the site of the July 19 final. The match is a rematch of sorts: Brazil, Morocco and Scotland were also drawn together at the 1998 World Cup, where Brazil won the group before reaching the final. Brazil is seeking its first World Cup title since 2002, while Morocco arrives after reaching the semifinals at the 2022 tournament.
The day opens at 3 p.m. Eastern with Qatar facing Switzerland in Group B at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and closes at 9 p.m. Eastern with Haiti meeting Scotland in Group C at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Haiti is making its first World Cup appearance since 1974.
The group stage runs through June 24, with the knockout rounds beginning June 28. The 48-team tournament, the first to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, concludes with the final on July 19.
