A male student was killed on his way to a school dance in Marysville, California, after being struck by a train on Friday. A girl who was walking alongside him was also struck and injured, according to the Associate Press.
The male student and a female student were on their way to a Sadie Hawkins dance at Marysville Charter Academy For The Arts when they were struck by the train, the AP reported.
The boy died at the scene and the girl was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center by helicopter
with traumatic injuries, Hunt said, according to the AP. The accident happened near Marysville's only high school and a little league park named Earle Yorton Little League Park where a game was being played, Hunt added.
People who were at the game told the Marysville Appeal-Democrat they heard a long blowing of the train's horn, and many raced to the scene as the train came to a stop, according to the AP.
Saturday's games are expected to go on as planned at the park which recently celebrated its 50th season, the AP reported.
Diane Washburn of Marysville Little League said she was worried about exposing children to the chaotic scene, according to the AP.
"Once they see that, that can't be unseen," Washburn said, the AP reported.
A school board official told the newspaper the victims were heading to a Sadie Hawkins day dance, according to the AP.
"Marysville is a small but busy city," Hunt said, the AP reported. "Everybody knows everybody so it was pretty traumatic."
He said he knew the teenage girl, and said she had a close relationship to the boy, the AP reported. "She's a sweetheart," Hunt added.
