A Burbank, Calif. man saved the life of toddler who fell from three stories high when he caught the child in his arms and flopped onto a box spring mattress nearby.
Disney animation worker Konrad Lightner has been identified as the man who managed to catch the falling child in his arms, according to CNN.
"It feels like I watched a TV show, like it didn't happen to me," Lightner told Southern California affiliate KABC.
Lightner and his wife Jenny were moving out of their Burbank apartment on Sunday when they spied a child trying to grab some toys that had been thrown out of a third story window, according to KPCC.
"We were on the way to the U-Haul," Konrad told the local station. "We were carrying our box spring from our bed, and when we saw that his leg was coming out and he was about to come down, I threw the box spring down."
The three-year-old child fell shortly after, Lightner told reporters.
Burbank fire Capt. Peter Hendrickson told reporters that the Lightners quickly placed the box spring beneath the window, anticipating the child's fall.
Hendrickson said the child tumbled into Lightner's arms and together, they fell onto the mattress.
"He was pretty high, so I didn't want to have my body against his and straight-up catch him, so I kinda grabbed him and kinda fell with him a little bit and went into the box spring. When he landed he cried a little bit," Lightner recounted.
Jennifer Lightner told KABC that the incident "didn't seem real until he was hanging from [a] chord, because there was no way he was going to get back."
That was the moment the couple decided to throw down the mattress, Jennifer added.
"It was now up to Konrad to catch him," she said.
The child, who appeared to be wearing footie pajamas, was transferred to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Hendrickson said. The toddler was not seriously injured.
30-year-old Lightner received a medal at the scene of the incident, KPCC reported.
"I'm not a hero," he said. "I just walked by and just tried to help...we were lucky to be there."
