Satan Made Her Do It: Woman Stabs Husband Because Devil Told Her He Worships NASCAR

A Tennessee woman was taken into custody after she drove her car into a church and stabbed her husband in the chest on Sunday. The woman told police she did it because the devil told her he was "worshiping" NASCAR. The husband survived the attack.

Stephanie Faye Hamman, from the town of Church Hill, told police God ordered her to drive through the front doors of the Providence Church across the street from her home on Silver Lake Road, the Kingsport Times-News reported.

"God told me He wanted me in there, so I drove my car through the front doors," Hamman told police, the newspaper reported. "God told me to, so I did it."

Hamman, 23, then took a huge kitchen knife and stabbed her husband, Steven Hamman, at the altar, claiming she was possessed by the devil. The woman also admitted to smoking large amounts of marijuana.

"She stated God had told her that smoking marijuana all day and all night was not good for her, and that she only needed to smoke it at night to help her relax," Police Chief Mark Johnson told the Kingsport Times-News. "Mrs. Hamman further stated that she felt her husband Steven was worshiping the NASCAR race at Bristol, which made her mad, and she began having thoughts that the devil put in her head."

As of Monday the husband was held at Holston Valley Medical Center in fair condition.

After she drove into the church, Stephanie Hamman allegedly called her husband. Steven Hamman arrived at the church to find his wife lying at the altar.

"When Steven came to check on me, I told him the devil was in me and I stabbed him in the heart," Stephanie told police, according to the newspaper.

"Mr. Hamman stated he pulled the knife out of his chest and fled the scene. He went back to the apartment where he waited on police and EMS assistance," Johnson told the newspaper.

Police found Stephanie at the hospital and arrested her for attempted first-degree murder and felony vandalism. She was held with no bond at the Hawkins County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.
