Electronic Arts and The Walt Disney Co. have entered in to a deal to produce a series of "Star Wars" video games, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Disney acquired Lucasfilm Ltd., the group responsible for the "Star Wars" franchise, in December. In April, the company dropped its video game production unit. The entertainment group will now give creative rights to The Electronic Artists label to produce the games.
The new contract turns gaming production over to Electronic Arts, the company responsible for hot ticket titles such as "The Sims," "Madden NFL," "FIFA Soccer" and "Medal of Honor."
In a statement to The Los Angeles Times, Electronic Arts said the label would be creating original story lines for video game content, in addition to using traditional material. The exclusive multi-year licensing deal will allow Electronic Arts to produce games across multiple technological platforms, The LA Times says.
"Every developer dreams of creating games for the 'Star Wars' universe," EA Labels President Frank Gibeau said in the statement. "Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for 'Star Wars' fans."
The Star Wars film series, spawned by director George Lucas, was first launched in 1977. The now multi-billion dollar franchise includes toys, books and animated television series spin-offs. The former Lucas video game unit was launched in 1982. The number of layoffs in the company were not announced after the video game section was dropped this year, the LA Times reports.
A new "Star Wars" movie is set to be released in 2015. Disney plans to launch Disney Infinity, a video game platform for its other titles, in September.
