EA and Walt Disney Sign Multi-Year Exclusive Deal On Star Wars Video Games

Electronic Arts sign a multi-year exclusive deal with The Walt Disney Company to develop and publish games based on the classic science-fiction franchise Star Wars.

EA, global leader in digital interactive entertainment, announced a multi-year exclusive agreement with Walt Disney to develop and publish new games around the world. The games will feature the epic Star Wars characters and storylines.

As a part of the deal, EA will have exclusive rights to develop the Star Wars games for "core gaming audience" across all interactive platforms and popular game genres. However, Disney will also reserve rights to develop new Star Wars games for "mobile, social, tablet and online game categories."

"This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come," said John Pleasants, Co-President of Disney Interactive, in a joint press release. "Collaborating with one of the world's premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world."

The Star Wars game titles will be developed by three EA owned game studios including BioWare known for its Mass Effect series, DICE famously known for its Battlefield series and Mirror's Edge and Visceral for Dead Space series, said Frank Gibeau, president of EA Labels. Among these, BioWare has previously worked in the development of massively multiplayer online role-playing games such as Star Wars: The Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic.

"The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay," Gibeau said in a statement.

The Star Wars franchise was originally owned by LucasFilms. In October last year, Walt Disney purchased LucasFilms in a deal for $4.05 billion. Disney also said that it would continue the Star Wars movie series by releasing the "first trilogy starting in 2015."
