Members of the Los Angeles Police Department announced they'd arrested a man who they think could be linked to the murder of a person whose remains were discovered strewn about Griffith Park two years ago.
38-year-old Gabriel Campos Martinez, who the LAPD described as "the suspect responsible" for the murder of Hervey Medellin, 66, was arrested in San Antonio on Sunday, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Law enforcement officials familiar with the case said Martinez once lived with the victim, whose various body parts - his head included - were found all over the sprawling Los Angeles park in 2012.
Police are currently detaining Martinez with no bail posted until authorities gain further information.
Friends reported Medellin missing just one week before his head was found shoved into a plastic bag near the Hollywood sign. Some dog walkers found the body part close to a Bronson Canyon trail, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Medellin, who reportedly was Martinez's partner at one point in their relationship, was last seen on Dec. 26 leaving his apartment on DeLongpre Ave. But family members told the Los Angeles Times that another one of Medellin's boyfriends at the time said he still heard from him until Jan. 4, when communication suddenly ceased.
The boyfriend said he grew worried when Medellin didn't come back. He submitted a missing persons report on Jan. 9, and authorities found his head and various other body parts - including two hands and two feet buried in a small grave - eight days after that.
Medellin, who used to work for Mexicana Airlines and reportedly enjoyed outdoor activities and art, was known to walk his pet dog in the Hollywood Hills where police later found his body. The park was close to his home, the LA Times reported.
