The wreckage of a single-engine Cessna lies in a hayfield after the pilot parachuted to safety and left his six passengers to crash.

A pilot and several passengers survived a near-disaster, on Saturday afternoon, by parachuting to safety when a single-engine Cessna crash-landed in a nearby hay field.

Six other passengers were aboard the plane, flying over Bates County, Missouri. The passengers all safely exited the plane before the pilot parachuted out. After the crash, officials from the local sheriff's office located the pilot at a nearby hanger. Everyone involved was treated and released at the scene.

"The plane is a total loss," the Bates County Sheriff's Office said in a statement shared on Facebook.

The incident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
