White Republicans Would Support Abortion If Their Daughters 'Got Pregnant By A Black Man,' Alabama Congressman Says (LISTEN)

An Alabama Democratic congressman said white Republicans who are against abortion would change their minds if their daughters "got pregnant by a black man," Al.com reported.

Representative Alvin Holmes, from Montgomery, made the comment on Tuesday during a debate about a bill that would make abortions illegal if the fetus shows signs of having a heartbeat.

Of the Republicans in the state legislature who are against abortion, "Ninety-nine percent of all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion," Holmes said.

"On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites who are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion.

"They ain't going to let her have the baby. You know, the truth sometimes hurts. I know it's hard to say that...They're not going to let that happen. You know that and I know that. You will never admit it," Holmes said.

The state House ended up passing the abortion bill, which was written by Republican Representative Mary Sue McClurkin from Indian Springs. Fetal heartbeats usually develop within the first six weeks of a pregnancy. The law does not exclude those who have been raped or are victims of incest, Al.com reported.

"I just don't think that gives her the right to kill," McClurkin said, Al.com reported.

The bill has yet to be debated by the Alabama Senate.

Holmes, who has been a representative since he was first elected in 1974, asked a white woman if she would let her daughter have a biracial baby.

"Yes sir," the woman, who was not identified, replied.

Holmes then asked the woman what she would do after the baby was born.

The woman replied: "Let it run around in my living room and enjoy it as my grandchild."
