Juan Valdez, 40, hangs from a car as he tries to carjack it on a California highway.

Police in California have released dramatic footage of a chase, attempted carjacking and shooting involving a domestic violence suspect.

The Lathrop Police Department recently released the video from the Jan. 27 incident.

They were responding to a domestic dispute call on Shadywood Avenue when police said Juan Valdez, 40, took off in a vehicle as they tried to question him.

Dashcam video showed officers following him through the neighborhood and then back to the house where the chase started.

Refusing to comply with officers who told him to turn off the car, he drove away again.

The video shows him racing through city streets, including driving on the wrong side of the road.

At one point officers hit his vehicle in an unsuccessful effort to get it to stop.

He eventually races onto Interstate 5 but the video shows one of his tires breaking apart, sending the car careening out of control. It stops near several cars that are stopped by a police officer at an onramp to the highway.

Valdez is then seen jumping out of his car and attempting to carjack another vehicle on the highway. The door is locked and the driver takes off.

But Valdez hangs onto the partially opened driver-side window and door of the blue Honda as it speeds off.

The driver pulls over a short time later and Valdez runs around to try to get in the passenger door.

An officer wearing a body camera comes up to the car with his gun aimed at Valdez and yells, "You're going to get -ucking shot" before shooting him multiple times as he continues to pull at the car door.

Valdez then falls to the road screaming.

"Ah, bro, why'd you shoot me?" Valdez says as other officers train guns on him.

Officers then render first aid to his gunshot wound as they wait for an ambulance.

Police say he was later released from the hospital and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.

He was charged with multiple felonies including carjacking, false imprisonment, evasion, resisting arrest and committing a felony while out on release or parole for a prior felony.
