Spain's foreign minister, Jose Manuel Albares, said on Thursday (Mar. 7) would reportedly give the United Nations' dedicated Palestine refugee agency UNRWA an additional EUR 20 million ($21.88 million) in aid despite other countries suspending their funding.

Reuters reported that the aid was mentioned by Albares to UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini, which was in addition to the earlier EUR 3.5 million ($3.83 million) the country already pledged in February.

The new funds from Madrid were aimed at "supporting the organization in its humanitarian work in Gaza and meeting the food, education and health needs of the nearly six million Palestinian refugees in the region."

The pledge followed a trend led by the United States and the UK to pause their UNRWA funding after accusations by Israel that a handful of its 13,000 staff in Gaza took part in the October 7 Hamas attack.
