According to Bloomberg, this action was taken in response to the organization's ties to a certain nation-state. These routers are being used for criminal and intelligence purposes.

WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 6: FBI Director Christopher Wray speaks during a press conference at the U.S. Department of Justice on December 6, 2023 in Washington, DC. The Department of Justice announced today that four Russian military personnel have been indicted for war crimes committed against a U.S. national living in Ukraine, the first of such charges ever to be brought under the U.S. war crimes statute.

During his speech at the Munich Security Conference, Wray highlighted the successful efforts of authorities in neutralizing a hacking unit associated with Russian intelligence. He emphasized that the unit, commonly referred to as APT 28 or Fancy Bear, was effectively expelled from the routers, ensuring that they could not regain access.

A network of hacked internet-connected devices, known as a botnet, was utilized by the Russian agency to carry out cyber operations against nations across the globe, including the United States and its European allies.

The court-authorized action aims to thwart spear-phishing and other activities that involve gathering credentials from targets of interest to Russian intelligence. The Department of Justice has stated that this includes governments, military bodies, security agencies, and corporate organizations both domestically and internationally.

During a speech in Munich, FBI Director Christopher Wray highlighted Russia's actions in the aftermath of their invasion of Ukraine. He mentioned that Russia has been engaged in reconnaissance activities targeting the U.S. energy sector.

"And that's a concerning trend because once access is gained, the hacker can swiftly transition from gathering information to launching attacks, catching victims off guard."

US Raises Concern Over Russia's Capabilities

The revelation of the FBI operation coincides with a period when US officials and lawmakers are grappling with a concerning increase in Russian capabilities. As per a report by CNN on Wednesday, new intelligence has been acquired by the US regarding Russia's recent endeavors to deploy a nuclear anti-satellite system in space.

"Russia has been consistently engaging in destructive cyberattacks before and during military conflict," stated the FBI chief, emphasizing their track record of violence and chaos.

US intelligence agencies employ hacking operations as a means to counteract the activities of rival governments such as Russia and China. However, in contrast to court-approved initiatives of the FBI, the specifics of these US cyber operations are seldom, if at all, made known to the public.
