Denver 104-Car Pileup Leaves One Dead, 30 Hospitalized; I-25 Reopened After Five Hour Closure

A 104-car pileup on Denver's Interstate 25 highway left one person dead on Saturday morning, according to KSDK 5.

At least 30 people were injured after the massive automobile accident occurred just before 10:40 a.m. MST, the Associated Press reported.

Officials who spoke with AP said a bout of heavy snow blew through the region, reducing visibility. Although this hasn't been named the official cause for the incident, law enforcement officials and emergency response teams on the scene wager it could have been a factor.

Eyewitness Travis Rosenbloom agreed, saying that it was difficult to see very fair in front of him when the crash suddenly happened.

"People [were] trying to hit their brakes to come to a sudden stop [and] started smashing into each other," Rosenbloom told AP. "I personally saw at least six cars smash into each other. Luckily, I was over far enough to not get hit."

Some 30 injured people were immediately transferred to nearby medical facilities, and are believed to include both adults and children.

Denver Health Chief Paramedic Scott Bookman did not say whether any of the victims were in critical condition.

Northbound I-25 was closed for about five hours, but reopened at about 3:50 p.m.

Motorists who were not injured from the accident took shuttle buses to speak with investigators on the case.

According to the Denver Post, some of the totaled vehicles were moved to South High School.
