A Missouri man has been charged in the case of a Kansas City Chiefs fan killed at Arrowhead Stadium.
23-year-old Independence resident Joshua T. Bradley was charged with involuntary manslaughter on Friday, the Associated Press reported.
Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker delivered the announcement of the charge this week. The case concerns the death of 30-year-old Kyle Van Winkle, of Smithville. He was killed on Dec. 1 after an argument escalated in the parking lot of the Kansas City stadium.
Bradley, who is being held by law enforcement officials on a $75,000 bond, was arrested early Friday morning.
According to local police who spoke with the Associated Press, Van Winkle reportedly climbed into a car that wasn't his in the stadium parking lot. The vehicle looked similar to the one in which he rode to the game. But the father and son who owned the car believed Van Winkle was trying to steal it.
A group of fans tailgaiting in the parking lot then confronted Van Winkle, and began fighting with him.
Prosecutor Peters Baker said Bradley struck Van Winkle at least one time in the midst of the scuffle.
"It was a series of incredibly tragic events that unfolded," Peters Baker announced to the courtroom.
According to a coroner's report from the autopsy, Van Winkle died from severe head trauma, presumably from fatal blows.
The father of Van Winkle called his son's passing a "senseless death," and lamented the 30-year-old's untimely end.
"Kyle was a hardworking, honest young man, who sincerely loved people and cared about people, especially his family," Dean Van Winkle said on Friday.
