Professor, 2 Students were Stabbed in a Canadian University
As per CNN, a 24-year-old student at the University of Waterloo in Ontario has been charged with aggravated assault after stabbing a professor and two students in a gender studies class on Wednesday.
The university vice president James Rush says that the "shocking attack" occurred amid a lecture in the class Philosophy 202 - Gender Studies. The New York Times reports that the study covers "the construction of gender in the history of philosophy through contemporary discussions."
One of the university's students, Yusuf Kaymak, who was attending the same class wherein the incident occurred, narrated what he witnessed.
He told CTV News that a man suddenly walked into their class and bluntly asked their professor if he was the prof. From there, he pulled a knife. Then, the students, including Kaymak, "ran out." After they got outside, they saw a gruesome scene wherein a student was bleeding from his arms after someone stabbed him.
Kaymak estimates that there were roughly 40 students inside the gender studies class when the appalling attack occurred.
However, as the Los Angeles Times reports, the wounds of the victims, according to the police, were non-life-threatening. Since they have taken the suspect in their custody, the Waterloo Regional Police Service Supt. Shaena Morris says, "There is no further threat to public safety either on campus or outside in the broader community."
The University of Waterloo announced on Twitter that it canceled classes at Hagey Hall for Wednesday evening. But despite that, the rest of the classes and operations on the campus remain the same.
Police Charged 24-year-old Student Suspect
According to The New York Times, Geovanny Villalba-Aleman, an international student at the university, faces multiple charges.
The Waterloo Regional Police confirmed in a statement that they charged the 24-year-old suspect with assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and mischief.
Waterloo Regional Police Service Chief Mark Crowell said in a press conference that it is "sad and disturbing" that the gender studies class attack happened in time for the Pride month celebration this June. He adds that he hopes the incident pushes everyone to unite amid celebrating diversity and inclusivity.
The University of Waterloo, which has more than 40,000 students, is one of the best technology educational institutions in Canada and the entire world. Meanwhile, the authorities have not determined the stabbing incident's motive.
