Around six o'clock in the evening, the tranquil Juneteenth celebration began in Hinsdale Lake Terrace and Honeysuckle Lane. At around 12:25 in the morning, authorities were called away "due to a 911 call alleging a fight had broken out nearby," according to a news release from the DuPage County Sheriff's Office.

What caused the shooting, where the shooters were when deputies arrived, and whether the accused knew any of the victims are all unknown. Witnesses who were present when the incident occurred recounted the chaos at the party as gunshots were heard.

The sheriff's office reported Sunday afternoon that there are no suspects in custody and that information "is very fluid" as detectives speak with the victims and examine cell phone and security footage. How many persons fired shots is unknown, and authorities have not issued any suspect descriptions.

Multiple people were reported to be injured while trying to leave the area. Twelve ambulances were on the scene. Most of the injuries are graze wounds, while there are also serious gunshot wounds. The casualty hasn't been identified, and authorities have not released information on the ages and conditions of the wounded people.

Mass Shootings in the US

After shootings at a birthday party in California, an NBA championship party in Colorado, and a graduation ceremony in Virginia all within the past month, the Juneteenth gathering is the most recent celebration in the US to be interrupted by gunfire.

Data from the Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are shot, excluding the gunman, showing that the carnage in Willowbrook is one of 310 mass shootings in the US this year.

The frightening statistic indicates that thus far, in 2023, there have been more mass shootings than days.

Mass shootings have become a regular occurrence in the United States. In 2023, there have been over 300 mass shootings, defined as incidents in which four or more people are shot and killed, not including the shooter. This is on pace to be one of the deadliest years on record for mass shootings in the US.

Several factors contribute to the high rate of mass shootings in the US. One factor is the easy availability of guns. The US has more guns per capita than any other developed country. This makes it easy for people to obtain guns, even with mental health problems or a history of violence.

Another factor is the lack of adequate mental health care in the US. Many mass shooters have a history of mental illness but often do not receive the treatment they need. This can make them more isolated and angry, increasing the risk of committing a mass shooting.

The culture of violence in the US also plays a role in mass shootings. The US had high rates of gun violence, homicide, and suicide. This violence can become normalized, making it more likely that people will resort to violence when angry or frustrated. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker says he is closely following the tragedy.
