A pilot and his passenger miraculously survived after the plane they were flying, a Progressive Aerodyne SeaRey registered out of Grosse Pointe Shores, crashed through the trees and between backyard garages in Detroit's eastern suburbs Wednesday morning.

Their names were not released.

Detroit police chief James White said the passenger compartment of the plane collapsed upon impact.

"We don't know yet what caused him to lose control or if it was an engine failure," White said. "But he's up and walking. His passenger is up and walking."

The plane took off several hours earlier from a small airport in Oakland County, north of Detroit.

While the plane crashed near a school and park, no one on the ground was hurt.

Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to investigate the cause of the crash.
