NBA: Atlanta Hawks Fires Head Coach Nate McMillan; Here's Why

The Atlanta Hawks made the move in hope that it will give them a boost for the remaining 23 games of the NBA regular season.

The Atlanta Hawks announced Tuesday that they had parted ways with head coach Nate McMillan.
Joe Prunty was assigned as the team's interim coach.

The Atlanta Hawks are hoping that a change in coaches will give them a boost for the rest of the season. Its front office remains optimistic despite the team's current ranking and the fact that they only have 23 games left to play.

The Hawks currently hold a record of 29-30 and are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks trail the sixth-place New York Knicks by 3.5 games, according to USA Today.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, who broke the news first, stated that the Atlanta Hawks are actively looking for a new head coach and that former Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder is likely to be "at the top of the list," the NBA reported.

The Hawks are also reportedly considering Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson and Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Charles Lee.

An Accomplished Basketball Coach

Before the 2020-21 NBA season, Lloyd Pierce recruited Nate McMillan, 58, as an assistant coach in Atlanta. He replaced Lloyd Pierce after Pierce got fired, as per a report from Inquirer Sports.

He was rewarded with a four-year deal after leading the fifth-seeded Atlanta Hawks to the Eastern Conference finals that season.

With a midseason promotion, he went on to compile a 99-80 record as Atlanta Hawks head coach throughout two and a half seasons.

Nate McMillan ranks 17th in NBA head coaching experience with 1,428 games coached for Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, and Indiana. He has a career coaching record of 760-668.
