Kickstarter Hacked, User Data Stolen, Credit Card Info Safe

The world's largest funding platform Kickstarter was hacked. This cyber attack has compromised users' information.

Kickstarter was informed by law enforcers on Wednesday that hackers managed to get in its system. Upon learning of the incident, the site quickly closed the security breach and started working on strengthening security measures all throughout the site's system.

After thorough investigation of the situation, the site immediately informed its users through its blog site that some user information including e-mail addresses, usernames, passwords, encrypted passwords, mailing addresses, and contact numbers were stolen, but not credit card information. There was also no indication of any unauthorized activity on all accounts except for a couple of user accounts.

Though actual passwords were not revealed, it is still possible for an expert hacker with sufficient knowledge about computing to decipher an encrypted password. The site advised its users then to immediately change their passwords. They also encourage users to do the same on sites where they use the same password.

To change the password in Kickstarter, a user needs to log in to his Kickstarter account first. Once in, he needs to find a banner at the top of the page that will let him create a new and strong password. Users might want to use password manager tools like 1Password and LastPass.

The site's management, feeling displeased of the cybercrime, issued an apology for the incident saying:

"We're incredibly sorry that this happened. We set a very high bar for how we serve our community, and this incident is frustrating and upsetting. We have since improved our security procedures and systems in numerous ways, and we will continue to do so in the weeks and months to come. We are working closely with law enforcement, and we are doing everything in our power to prevent this from happening again."
