Man's Body Found in Plane Landing-Gear Wheel at Washington Airport

The remains of an unidentified man were discovered inside a plane's landing-gear wheel on Saturday.

The grounded plane had recently landed at Dulles International Airport in Washington, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority obtained by CNN.

Airport officials and ground crew members found the body in the Airbus A340 on Saturday afternoon.

The plane, operated by South African Airways, was stationed in a remote area of the Washington airport.

Border Protection officials, along with police, fire fighters and other law enforcement officials, arrived at the scene shortly after the body was found at about 1:30 p.m.

The flight's point of origin is still unknown, CNN reported.

"An active investigation is ongoing," airports authority officials stated. The Fairfax County, Virginia medical examiner's office has been tasked with carrying out the probe.

Dulles airport traffic was undisturbed by the discovery - all other departing and arriving flights carried on without a hitch.

According to CNN, Dulles is one of the busiest airports in the U.S., located just 25 miles west of the District of Columbia.
