How Did Kim Become the Supreme Leader of North Korea?
Kim Jong-un was born on January 8, 1982, according to the North Korean government. Though some claim that is not his actual date of birth.
He is the son of previous North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, the son of Kim Il-sung, who established the People's Democratic Republic of Korea, now known as North Korea.
Kim Jong-un had an older brother and a younger sister, whom he got raised alongside in Switzerland.
According to reports, Kim Jong-un was a shy kid but had a great interest in basketball, which helped him get along with other students.
In 2000, he returned to North Korea and studied at Kim Il-sung University, wherein he obtained physics and military degrees before graduating in 2007.
He was officially introduced to the North Korean people in 2010, and his true identity was disclosed. This was also the year he joined the Worker's Party of North Korea.
Kim Jong-un was named Supreme Leader only a few days after his father died in December 2011.
