A Virginia music teacher was shot and killed after she answered a knock at her front door.
Police are currently on the hunt for the gunman who killed 59-year-old Alexandria resident Ruthanne Lodato, CBS reported. A second woman was also injured in the Feb. 6 incident.
According to law enforcement officials who spoke with CBS, the suspected shooter has been described as a mature, white man with a receding hairline and a gray beard. He was reportedly seen in a tan-colored jacket.
Alexandria's Chief of Police Earl Cook reiterated the pressing nature of this murder last week.
"Finding and arresting this subject is our top priority," Cook announced.
It's unclear whether the shooter knew the victims, CBS reported. Local officials are encouraging residents of the area to lock their windows and doors, and to ensure they know who is knocking before answering guests who come to call.
The second woman who sustained gunshot wounds has reportedly spoken briefly with detectives, who intend on interviewing her more extensively in the near future.
Police are unsure whether this murder is connected to a similar slaying that occurred in 2012, when 69-year-old Ronald Kirby was killed at his house in November.
Kirby reportedly lived just over a mile away from Lodato.
"We currently have no evidence linking this to any other crime, however, it would be remiss of us to not consider the possibility that it may be similar to other crimes," Cook stated during a media conference last Thursday.
