Los Angeles Fire Leaves Elderly Woman Dead, Rescue Crews Unable to Save 98-Year-Old in Secured Home

An elderly Los Angeles resident died on Saturday, after a fire erupted in her heavily-secured home.

Firefighters couldn't save the 98-year-old woman, whose identity remains unknown, from the blaze in her South Los Angeles home when the arrived there early morning.

Emergency response crews reportedly tried and failed getting through a metal security door at the woman's house.

When they did manage to get inside the home, swallowed by thick plumes of dark smoke, some officials were able to pull the woman out of the house. She was unconscious at the time, the Associated Press reported.

The unidentified woman was immediately rushed to a medical facility close by, where doctors later pronounced her deceased.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, which spoke with AP shortly after the fatal fire, a neighbor made an attempt to get into the home before firefighters arrived at the scene, but couldn't advance due to the choking flames.

About 50 firefighters were sent to the scene of the house fire. Some cut holes in the roof to help alleviate the amount of smoke in the house.

It took officials nearly 18 minutes to put out the fire.
