New Mexico Ambulance Carjacked With Driver Sleeping Inside

Carjackers stole a New Mexico emergency medical response vehicle while the ambulance's driver slept soundly in the back this weekend.

According to the Associated Press, the ambulance worker fell asleep in the back of his vehicle, then woke up when he heard two people entering the car.

Albuquerque police told AP a man and woman have been arrested in alleged connection with the carjacking. They've been accused of stealing the ambulance at about 3 in the morning on Saturday.

Elder Guevara, a spokesperson for the local police department, said the vehicle was parked just outside of downtown Albuquerque's Lovelace Medical Center when the unidentified man and woman stole the car. They reportedly zoomed off while the worker slept in the back of the ambulance, but he managed to leap out the door and run to safety when they reached an intersection.

Police officers engaged in a quick chase with the man and woman driving the ambulance. Authorities followed the vehicle as it veered eastbound, then westbound, on Interstate 40, AP reported.

Officials eventually stopped the ambulance after setting down spikes that popped its tires.
