A small plane crashed near a Nashville, Tenn. YMCA on Monday evening, leaving the four members of family on board dead.
The Gulfstream 690C plane, which departed from Great Bend, Kansas at around 2:45 p.m., burst into flames less than three hours later, after slamming into an open grassy area near the neighborhood gymnasium.
The plane missed several buildings close by, including the Bellevue YMCA. The four family members on board died at the site of the accident.
WTVF-TV reported the plane was headed for an airfield nearby, but missed its destination on the first try. Upon the second attempt, the Gulfstream 690C crashed into the field, which was just 14 miles south of the target airstrip.
Metro Nashville Fire Chief George Hickey told WTVF that the grassy meadow was "a totally devastated area," adding that the pilot made a "hard right bank and into the ground," causing him to narrowly miss a retirement home and the gym nearby.
Around 300 people who were inside the YMCA were evacuated from the building while law enforcement officials checked out the scene, which spread more than 80 yards.
The four deceased haven't yet been identified. Police are slated to seal off the area while they investigate the site.
