A man from the suburbs of Chicago reportedly shot and killed his two children and wife, then died shortly thereafter.
Local police told CBS that 43-year-old Michael Worsham shot his son, 17, in the head, then dragged his wife out of bed and shot her to death on Sunday night.
According to Robbins Police Chief Mithell Davis, Worsham proceeded to shoot his 15-year-old daughter in her back when she tried to run away. He followed her outside, shot her once more, then pulled her back into the residence.
The family's 14-year-old stepson reportedly managed to run away with his 5-year-old nephew in tow.
CBS reported the 14-year-old grappled with Worsham for the gun, until the father said he could run free if he released the firearm.
Davis described the 14-year-old as a "hero."
"He saved his life, and he saved the life of his 5-year-old nephew, and we thank god that he was able to do that," Davis told CBS Chicago.
Worsham then died from an alleged heart attack, Davis said, but couldn't confirm the cause of death pending an autopsy scheduled for Monday.
Police are still unsure why Worsham killed the members of his family, but have opened an investigation into the event.
