Russians are apparently not the only ones who enjoy their vodka.
According to data from the research company Euromonitor, the U.S., Great Britain, Ireland and Brazil all prefer vodka over other forms of hard alcohol. The news site Quartz compiled the findings into a world map showing the liquor of choice for each country.
The alcohol shown is based off of the six most popular types of liquor used around the world. Liquors that are specific to a country, such as baiju from China, were not considered, Quartz reported.
"The liquor shown is the one most heavily consumed in that country- out of whiskey, vodka, tequila, rum, gin and brandy," Quartz wrote, describing the map.
The map shows the liquor of choice from 53 countries.
Mexico chose Tequila as number one, which is made from the blue agave plant and produced only in Mexico.
At the bottom of the liquor pole were gin, brandy and rum, Quartz reported. Four countries- Chile, Columbia, Italy and Peru, chose rum over the others. Brandy was the number one drink in only China and the Philippines. Only one country, the Netherlands where the Dutch live, loved Gin the most.
Though vodka was a top contender, preferred by 21 of the countries, whisky came in as the number one poison of choice, preferred by 25 countries.
However, according to a new report from DNews, whisky causes the worst hangovers. That is because whisky is a dark liquor, which gets it color from toxins called congeners. Other hangover causing drinks are brandy, red wine, bourbon and dark rum.
The darker the liquor, the more congeners it contains and the more severe the hangover will be.
