Pennsylvania is 'Haunted' And New Jersey Is 'Bad': Map Of Google Autocompletes Shows Stereotypes From All 50 States

The most common stereotype that New York State has is "expensive," at least it is according to a map of stereotypes of all 50 American states.

A new map compiled by the Twitter account @Amazing_Maps shows one word that people associate each state with the most. The map is based off of the most common Google autocomplete results that came up whenever a state was Googled, the Huffington Post reported.

"Google autocomplete results: "Why is [state] so..." the Tweet for the map reads, which came out on Saturday.

For example, when the words "Why is New York so..." were googled the word "expensive" was the most common word people typed next to it, thus causing Google to autocomplete the search for New York with "expensive." Alaska was also characterized as expensive.

New Jersey was labeled as "bad," while Connecticut and Pennsylvania were both labeled as "haunted."

Residents from states all over commented on what they say were the map's puzzling results.

"why IS connecticut so haunted?" Gregory the Grape tweeted Saturday.

"if you go to Google and type in "Why is Georgia so_____," it'll suggest "Why is Georgia so backwards?" The Urban Sage tweeted.

"The combo of racism and homophobia is what makes it backwards, I'm guessing," The Urban Sage later tweeted.

Utah was characterized as "Mormon," a label that Wired magazine called a "reductive 'truth.' " Other "reductive truths" included: Washington state being called "liberal," Oklahoma labeled as "Republican," Florida as "hot," Kansas as "flat," and Colorado as "fit," Wired magazine reported.

At the other extreme end of New York were South Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky and West Virginia, which were all labeled as "poor," the Huffington Post reported.
